A former Rangers player has been killed in a drive-by shooting in his hometown in Honduras.

Arnold Peralta was found dead in a shopping centre car park in La Ceiba after reportedly being gunned down by a motorbike rider on Thursday.

The 26-year-old defensive midfielder played for Rangers for 18 months and won 24 caps with his national side, playing at the 2014 World Cup and the London Olympics.

His devastated father Carlos said: "This is terrible. They killed my exemplary son.

“I can't say more because of the pain I feel.”

Peralta played 29 times for Rangers, helping them to win the 2013-14 Scottish League One title.

He left the club in January to return home to play for Club Deportivo Olimpia. The club’s season came to an end last weekend.

Osman Madrid, head of the national football federation in Honduras, said: “This is a tragic death that the national sport mourns."

No arrests have been made.
