A man is due in court after reportedly making a bomb hoax at an airport - so his girlfriend's flight would be delayed.

French police arrested the 33-year-old after yesterday's alleged phone threat.

The man contacted authorities at Bordeaux-Merignac, a regional airport in south-west France that handles military flights as well as passenger jets, and told them: "There is a bomb."

Prosecutors said he had admitted the hoax call, adding he wanted to delay a flight his girlfriend was due to take - because she was stuck in traffic and at risk of missing it.

Parts of the airport, France's sixth-busiest, was immediately sealed off while police searched for a bomb, which was not found. The man was arrested a few miles away and taken in for police questioning.

AFP reported he risks up to two years in prison and a £30,000 fine.

Bordeaux-Merignac, which saw nearly five million passengers through its doors last year, mainly handles flights to Europe and north Africa.

It shares its runway with the French Air Force thanks to the closure of a nearby air base.
