Rescue workers and desperate villagers dug through mud, rocks and the debris of shattered homes today after a landslide buried a remote village in western India, killing at least 30 people and trapping more than 150.

Two days of torrential rains triggered the landslide early yesterday, but rescuers took several hours to reach Malin village in Pune district of Maharashtra state because of bad communications, dangerous roads and debris. Rain was still hampering efforts this morning.

District official Suresh Jadhav said the disaster only came to light after a bus driver saw the wiped out village and alerted authorities in a nearby city.

At least 30 bodies have been recovered and eight people pulled out alive, with the death toll expected to rise.
