Frida the search and rescue dog saves lives in Mexico

Rescuers and volunteers have been working tirelessly to look for people trapped in the rubble after the devastating earthquake in Mexico.

But no-one has captured the hearts of Mexicans and those watching the relief efforts from afar quite like a special Mexican Navy rescue dog called Frida.

The Labrador retriever has made global headlines after the Mexican president praised her work following deadly 7.1 magnitude quake.

He tweeted, “this is Frida. She belongs to SEMAR and has helped save 52 lives in various natural disasters at national and international levels.”

Her efforts have been applauded across social media, actor Chris Evans retweeted a video of Frida at work, adding: "What did we do to deserve dogs?"

The rescue dog and her canine colleagues were deployed to find survivors buried under the rubble.

Wearing protective goggles, a khaki harness and two pairs of booties, the seven-year-old dog has managed to save 12 people and located 41 bodies beneath the debris.

Emergency workers continue to evacuate sites destroyed the disaster. At least 344 people have died, including 205 in Mexico City.
