A German holidaymaker has been killed by a shark while swimming in the sea with his wife off the coast of Egypt.

The 52-year-old man was attacked by the animal yesterday in the popular holiday resort, close to the coastal city of al-Qusair. His leg was reportedly bitten off at the knee.

The victim's body has been moved to a local hospital, security officials confirmed today.

The attack, which happened in one of the world's top diving destinations, is now being investigated. The species of shark has not yet been identified.

An official from the German Embassy in Cairo confirmed it had received reports that a German citizen died in the area. He said it had not yet been informed of the man's cause of death.

It is the first fatal shark attack in the region since 2010, when a shark killed a 70-year-old German tourist while she was snorkelling.

A French woman was also killed by a shark in the resort in 2009.
