A two-year-old girl died days after Christmas because she swallowed a tiny button battery.

Surgeons operated on little Brianna Florer for more than two hours in an effort to stop internal bleeding after its toxic contents began burning her oesophagus.

Grandfather Kent Vice said she had enjoyed a "perfect Christmas" and on Boxing Day was playing like normal with her siblings.

But the following day she began vomiting and turned blue, with her parents rushing her to hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

"One minute she is perfect, and the next minute she is dead. We had no idea when she swallowed [the batter]," Mr Vice told the Oklahoman.

The tragedy has prompted the family to call for action on button batteries, cells little larger than a pea that are often found in toys.

Mr Vice added: “I want to keep these things out of houses. They are dangerous.”
