A former rubbish collector known as the “Grim Sleeper” has been given the death sentence for murdering nine women and a teenage girl over more than two decades in Los Angeles.

Lonnie Franklin Jr. showed no emotion as a court clerk read out the jury’s decision that he should be executed.

“We got what we came to get, a just verdict,” said Porter Alexander, the father of 18-year-old victim Alicia Alexander. “I’m glad I lived to see it. It’s a long time coming.”

Franklin, 63, was convicted of ten counts of first-degree murder last month for crimes dating back more than 30 years.

He was dubbed the Grim Sleeper because of an apparent 14-year gap between attacks, and was caught when DNA from his son, who was in prison, showed similarities to genetic evidence found on some of the victims.
