Hillary Clinton has officially announced her bid to become the first female president of the United States.

The former first lady and secretary of state made her 2016 plans official on her campaign website today.

She says in a video that "everyday Americans need a champion. I want to be that champion".

In the two-minute video aimed at highlighting the aspirations of a variety of Americans, Mrs Clinton adds: "So I'm hitting the road to earn your vote because it's your time, and I hope you'll join me on this journey."

The 2016 presidential election will be held in November next year and if Mrs Clinton wins she will succeed Barack Obama to become the first ever female US head of state.

Before then she has to compete in primaries for the Democratic nomination.

To that end, she is expected to travel soon to early voting states, including Iowa and New Hampshire.
