The man who shot dead Osama bin Laden has said he is ready to defend himself after an apparent British jihadist posted a death threat describing him as the "number one" target in America.

Former Navy SEAL Rob O'Neill spoke out after his home address was published online with a message calling on extremists to "hunt down and kill" him as revenge for the death of the al Qaeda leader.

The threat was posted on social media under the name Umm Hussain Britaniya - an alias used by a British jihadist who travelled to Syria in 2013.

Mr O'Neill, 39, told Fox News: "I've been ready for this since we killed Osama bin Laden.

"I know how to defend myself.

"A lot of times when there's a bomb threat there's not a bomb. But it's the ones you don't see. So, everyone has to become more vigilant."

The Butte-Silver Bow Police Department in Montana said it was "aware and is taking proper precautions", according to The Montana Standard.

Last year, Mr O'Neill revealed it was him who shot and killed Osama bin Laden following the raid on his compound in Pakistan.

He left the Navy SEALS in 2012 after 16 years of service and more than 400 missions, earning two Silver Stars and four Bronze Stars.
