Former Tottenham star Osvaldo Ardiles has admitted he feels lucky to be alive after he was involved in a car accident in the Falkland Islands.

The World Cup winner had 28 stitches to a head wound after being airlifted to hospital following the crash on Monday.

Former Spurs teammate Ricky Villa was also slightly injured after Ardiles rolled their hire car on a remote gravel road.

The Argentine pair had been making a film about their experiences playing for Tottenham during the 1982 Falklands war.

The six passengers also included Ardiles’s British-born son Freddie.

Speaking after flying back to Argentina today, Ardiles, who covered his head wound with a baseball cap, said: “I thought at one point I was going to die.

“When I began to lose control of the car I thought, ‘This is really very serious.’

Ardiles, 61, will now undergo more neurological tests to make sure he has suffered no brain damage but said he expected his recovery to be “relatively quick.”
