Incredible footage has emerged of the moment a man punched a kangaroo in the Australian Outback after it grabbed a dog in a headlock.

Video uploaded to Facebook on Sunday showed the man jump out of a truck to confront the marsupial which is seen holding a tight grip on the dog.

After the kangaroo releases the animal, the man stood toe-to-toe with it before he unleashed a forceful punch which almost knocked it backwards.

The man then turns to go back towards the truck and instructs two dogs to follow him. The incident is believed to have happened on a hunting trip in rural bushland.

A narrator of the footage, which appears to have been shown on a TV show, described the scene by saying "all is not as it seems".

He can be heard saying: “The big buck actually has hold of the dog, not the other way around. As (the man) runs in, we realise this could get dangerous.”

Since it was uploaded to social media, the video has received more than three million views.

The date of the incident is not known.

The man who posted the footage said: "My buddy from Australia sent me this. Them roos are wild as hell."
