This is the incredible moment a female surfer set a world record by riding a 68ft wave.

Maya Gabeira, 31, set the record in Praia do Norte in Nazare, Portugal in January.

In the footage she can be seen confidently surfing from trough to crest.

Months later, Guinness World Records confirmed that she had broken the record for the largest wave surfed by a female.

Ms Gabeira was presented with her award on October 1 in a ceremony overlooking the waves, according to the Guinness World Records.

During the ceremony she said: "To set the world record has been a dream of mine for many years.

She said after an accident in 2013, it "felt like a distant dream."

Ms Gabeira added: "It took a lot of work to have a season like last year, to be 100 percent again and to complete it with a Guinness World Records title is quite special."

Guinness World Records judged her attempt by looking through archives going back over 20 years.
