A bus passenger in India was arrested after an altercation over his strong smelling socks.

Police arrested the 27-year-old while he was travelling to the country’s capital, New Delhi, on November 26.

Passengers lodged a complaint against him for “causing a public nuisance” after he removed his shoes and socks, according to the BBC.

The smell from the socks was so strong that passengers asked him to throw them out or put them away but he refused.

A heated argument ensued, resulting in the passengers forcing the bus driver to pull over at a police station in the Indian state of Himchal Pradesh, where they filed a complaint.

The Hindustan Times quoted the passenger as saying that his socks did not smell and that the passengers had quarrelled with him for "no reason".

Police told the BBC that he had been granted bail.
