A footballer has died after he was struck by lightning during a match in Indonesia.

A video has captured the awful moment the 35-year-old man was hit before he collapsed to the ground in front of his teammates.

Septain Raharja, from Subang, collapsed during a friendly match at the Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java.

He was still breathing after being struck and was rushed to a local hospital but died soon afterwards, local media PRFM News reported.

It is the second time an Indonesian footballer has been struck by lightning recently.

A young footballer in Bojonegoro, East Java was struck by lightning during the Soeratin U-13 Cup in 2023.

He suffered a cardiac arrest as a result and was rushed off the pitch and taken to hospital for treatment.

The boy was successfully revived and regained consciousness after around 20 minutes.

A 12-year-old boy was left in critical condition and a man had to be taken to hospital after they were struck by lightning during a school football tournament in Hertford in October.

The tournament had been called off due to stormy weather conditions and the teams were leaving the pitch when the lightning bolt hit him.

A British mother was also left fighting for her life after being struck by lightning while sunbathing near Split, in Croatia, in 2022.

The 48-year-old had been sunbathing with her daughter on Kašjuni Beach before the weather turned and a storm rolled in.

It was reported at the time that doctors believed lightning struck the woman’s necklace.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says 30 to 60 people get struck by lightning in Britain each year, which would place the odds to be less than one in a million.
