Isis fanatics targeted by RAF jets in Mosul strikes

RAF jets are targeting Islamic State fanatics engaged in street-by-street fighting against Iraqi forces in Mosul.

Tornados bombed an IS “strong-point” in the west of the city yesterday, and Typhoons struck two targets, including one position from where extremists were attacking Iraqi troops with heavy machine-gun fire.

The British planes took part in 11 air raids on IS in Mosul on Sunday as the fanatics were engaged in “extremely close combat” with the Iraqi army backed up by UK and US special forces.

Sniper, heavy machine-gun and rocket-propelled grenade teams were destroyed by Paveway IVs bombs.

Iraqi forces are closing in on Mosul’s grand Nuri mosque in the old city centre from where the so-called “caliphate” was declared by IS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in 2014, over parts of Iraq and Syria.

The extremists have already been driven out of the east of the city.
