A Lithuanian television presenter has sparked a homophobia row after suggesting Austrian drag act and now Eurovision song contest winner Conchita Wurst was in need of a shave.

Announcing the points awarded by voters in his country, Ignas Krupavičius took a razor from his blazer pocket and said; "Now it's time to shave, Austria - ten points" as he blew an air kiss to the camera.

BBC presenter Graham Norton voiced his distaste at the remark as it was made.

Danish host Nikolaj Koppel replied; "Time to shave, I think not" as he linked to Austria's vote announcer, who wore a fake beard as she delivered her own country's results.

Graham Norton responded: "Well said, Nikolaj".

The comments divided viewers on Twitter, with some accusing Krupavičius of being insensitive.

One wrote: "#Eurovision Time to shave? Wow that was tasteless."

Another said: "Time to shave? I think not!" And then the Austrian woman comes on wearing a beard! Priceless! eurovision".

But others suggested the comment was intended as light humour.

One user said: "'time to shave' was just a joke, I'm sorry who didn't understand it. At least we got ATTENTION haha!"

Today footage emerged of Conchita, whose real name is Tom Neuwirth, performing on a national talent show in 2009.

The 25-year-old appears clean shaven with short spiky hair as he sings the Michael Jackson hit You Are Not Alone.

Accepting the Eurovision trophy on Saturday, the singer said: "This night is dedicated to everyone who believes in the future of peace and freedom. You know who you are, we are unity and we are unstoppable. "
