A 22-year-old Australian jockey has died in a 12-floor fall from his Singapore apartment, reportedly after trying to climb in when he locked himself out.

Tim Bell was found motionless at the foot of the building on Tuesday evening, police said. He died from his injuries at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

The up-and-coming sportsman rode 135 winners in his first season as a senior jockey, winning the 2013-14 Brisbane jockey's premiership. He was runner-up last season.

In a statement, his club, the Singapore Turk Club, mentioned unconfirmed reports that the young rider had been trying to climb into his apartment after locking himself out.

Trainer Steven Burridge called the incident a tragedy.

"Timmy had the whole future ahead of him and not only could he ride, but he was also such a great young man, and was very driven to become a very good jockey," he said.

His parents Grant and Keiley Bell said: "Tim will always be remembered as our little hero and best mate."

Police said officers were investigating the "unnatural death".
