Joe Biden said today it is his “expectation” that he’ll run for re-election as US President in 2024 – when he would be 82.

At 78, Democrat Biden is already the oldest American president to ever hold office.

Biden was asked at his first news conference whether he thought he could face a rematch against Republican Donald Trump who has suggested he might run again.

He scoffed at the question on Thursday replying: “Oh, I don’t even think about it. I have no idea.”

But said: “My plan is to run for re-election, that’s my expectation.”

He added that he “would fully expect” Vice President Kamala Harris to be his running mate again, adding that she is “a great partner” who is “doing a great job.”

Biden was addressing reporters in the East Room of the White House this afternoon.

He has been in office since January 20 but is the first president to reach two months without having conducted a question-and-answer session.

Biden today pledged to have 200million doses of Covid-19 vaccines administered by the end of his first 100 days in office.

The target is double the goal he set in December and reached earlier this month before his 60th day in power.

His goal seems ambitious but it actually amounts to a continuation of the country’s existing pace of vaccination.

The US is now averaging about 2.5m doses per day.

Over the next month, two of the bottlenecks to getting Americans vaccinated are set to be lifted.

The US supply of vaccines is on track to increase and states are lifting eligibility requirements for people to get jabs.

Biden also said he is committed to making progress on overhauling the US immigration system, bolstering gun laws and strengthening voting rights.

He’s also not ruling out supporting changes to Senate procedures that would help him achieve those goals.
