Khmer Rouge jailer imprisoned for life

Sentenced: Duch acknowledges judge
10 April 2012

The Khmer Rouge's chief jailer was imprisoned for life today by a UN-backed genocide court for his crimes against Cambodia's people, including torture and murder.

Kaing Guek Eav, who sent up to 16,000 of the regime's victims to their deaths in the killing fields during the late Seventies, had his appeal against a 35-year sentence rejected by the Phnom Penh tribunal.

Eav, 69 - known as Duch - pressed his palms together in a gesture of respect for the judge before being led away.

A prosecutor said: "Justice is served after more than 30 years."
