FBI investigators have found no motive for the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.

FBI agents looking into the Las Vegas massacre said they cannot determine why gunman Stephen Paddock, 64, killed 58 people and injured nearly 900 others in October 2017.

Aaron Rouse, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Las Vegas office, said Paddock acted alone when he carried out the horrendous attack and there was no motivation other than his own "infamy."

Mr Rouse said the reason for Paddock's rampage remains a mystery after months of study by agents and behavioural specialists.

Las Vegas police closed their investigation in August, also without a motive.

Paddock shot himself dead in his hotel room after carrying out the attack, leaving no note.

Revellers fled in terror during the 2017 attack at a music festival, as the killer fired from a room on the 32nd floor of a hotel and casino overlooking the famous strip.

Paddock, who acted alone, opened fire on a crowd of 22,000 from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel casino in Las Vegas.

US Officials previously said in the days and months before the shooting, Paddock booked hotel rooms overlooking other music festivals.

He booked rooms overlooking the Lollapalooza festival in Chicago in August and the Life Is Beautiful show near the Vegas Strip in late September, authorities said.
