An Irish meteorologist has received a heart-warming message from a little girl in the wake of Storm Ophelia.

Joanna Donnelly, from Met Éireann, Ireland's Met Office, presents weather forecasts for television broadcaster RTÉ.

As Storm Ophelia gathered momentum, Ms Donnelly warned Ireland about potential destruction expected as the storm hurtled towards the coast.

One adorable viewer, Olivia O'Driscoll, wrote personally to the meteorologist in the aftermath to thank her.

Ms Donnelly posted a picture of the sweet handwritten letter to Twitter on Tuesday with the caption “My work here is done”.

The letter reads:

Dear Ms Donnelly,

Thank you so much for warning us all about Hurricane Ophelia and calling a red warning. My Dad is a fisherman and he is safe. My Grandad is a fisherman too and he is safe.

From Olivia O'Driscoll

Schull,

West Cork

P.S. Thank you for two days off school.

Hundreds of people in the Republic of Ireland were without power and water yesterday as the clean-up after Storm Ophelia began.
