Meghan Markle’s father has said his daughter looks “terrified” and has a “pained smile” as she begins a lifetime of royal duties.

Thomas Markle believes his daughter is “under too much pressure” and that the Royal Family “looks like something out of a 1930s movie”, according to the Sun on Sunday.

He told the newspaper he has not heard from his daughter in two months and fears he is being frozen out over the staged paparazzi photos and for speaking publicly about her wedding to Prince Harry.

“I think she’s under too much pressure. My thing about my daughter now is I think she’s terrified,” he said.

“I’ve seen her smiles for years. I know her smile. I don’t like the one I’m seeing now.”

The Duchess of Sussex has had a packed schedule of royal duties since her wedding including Trooping the Colour, a trip to Ireland with Prince Harry and her first official outing with the Queen.

On Saturday, she was pictured laughing and chatting animatedly with her sister-in-law the Duchess of Cambridge in the royal box at the Wimbledon championships.

Harry and Meghan were also described as looking “very happy” when they dined on lamb and hake at a Dublin restaurant four days ago, which had been closed to the public so they could enjoy their meal privately.

But Mr Markle, 73, told the Sun on Sunday he was worried about the influence the royals were having on her and that his calls to his daughter had gone unanswered.

Remarking on the fact her style had changed since she married Prince Harry, he was quoted as saying: “It’s ridiculous, why do they have to cover their knees? The Royal Family seem like something out of a 1930s movie.”

He added that his message to Meghan would be that he loves her, misses her and is sorry for “anything that went wrong”.

Mr Markle said he wanted to be her child’s grandfather and be part of their lives.
