Meteor lights up the whole night sky as it crashes down over Finland

Martin Coulter17 November 2017

This is the moment the night sky was lit up by a meteor falling over Finnish Lapland.

Stargazers say they saw the sky "light up like day" for a few seconds as the rock crashed to Earth on Thursday.

Newly released footage shows the meteor light up the sky over Inari, in Finland.

It was reportedly also seen in nearby parts of Russia and Norway.

Eyewitness Atle Staaleen saw the flash of light on Thursday, according to the Barents Observer.

He said: "The lights came from all around us, like a massive explosion that lasted for some five or six seconds."

Russian experts say they are certain the rock did not land on its territory.
