A man suspected of stealing Michael Schumacher's medical records has been found hanged in his prison cell, prosecutors have said.

The man was found dead in jail in Zurich, Switzerland, where he is was being held as part of an investigation into the alleged theft.

He worked for the Swiss helicopter air rescue company which organised Schumacher's transport from a French hospital to Switzerland in June.

Swiss prosecutors said there was no suggestion anybody else had been involved in the death.

Schumacher was seriously injured in a skiing accident in the French Alps on December 29 last year, and has spent much of the time since in a medically-induced coma.

He was reportedly travelling at speeds of up to 60mph when he crashed while skiing off-piste.

The details of the condition of the seven times Formula 1 world champion were being offered for sale for up to 50,000 euros, it was claimed.

His manager, Sabine Kehm, said at the time of the alleged theft: "We cannot judge if these documents are authentic. However, the documents are clearly stolen. The theft has been reported. The authorities are involved.

"We will therefore, in every single case, press for criminal charges and damages against any publication of the content or reference to the medical file.”
