Mohammed Morsi meets judges over power grab

Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi is due to meet senior judges to discuss last week’s decree giving him absolute power.

The announcement led to clashes on the streets and a stock market plunge. Morsi said the decree was temporary and to prevent democratically elected bodies being undermined. He said he was committed to finding “common ground” with other parties.

The Judges’ Club, which represents Egypt’s judges, called for a nationwide strike to protest against the decree over the weekend. A teenager died and at least 40 people were wounded when anti-Morsi protesters stormed the offices of the political arm of the president’s Muslim Brotherhood in the Nile Delta city of Damanhur, according to officials.
