This is the heart-stopping moment a professional cyclist smashes at high speed into the side of a car during a race - and survives.

Irish rider Matt Brammeier, 30, ploughed into the service vehicle during stage six of the Tour of Utah in the US.

He was instantly thrown from his bike and travelled several feet on the back of the car before sliding onto the road surface, where medics rushed to help him.

Brammeier, racing with team MTN-Qhubeka, was left with rib and pelvis fractures after Saturday's collision.

Team medic Dr Jarrad van Zuydam said in a statement: "Matt Brammeier was involved in a high speed collision with a vehicle during the queen stage of the Tour of Utah.

"Thankfully, Matt has suffered no head, neck or spinal injuries and is currently stable in hospital. His musculoskeletal injuries are significant, however.

"He suffered rib fractures on both sides as well as a small pneumothorax. He also has fractures of the sacral and pelvic bones. Matt is unlikely to require surgery but will need some time to recover from his injuries.”

Brammeier shared a picture from his hospital bed with fans the following day, telling them things were "all good in the hood".

The former Irish champion had been chasing the peloton on the Guardsman Pass in the Big Cottonwood Canyon.
