The Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Britons visiting Germany in the wake of the shootings in Munich.

British officials said they are investigating the attacks in which several people have been killed after shots were fired at a Bavarian shopping centre, near Munich’s Olympic stadium.

Munich police said they believe they were dealing with a "shooting rampage" amid reports of at least three different gunmen and shots fired elsewhere in the city.

An update on the Foreign Office website reads: “There are reports of a security incident at the Munich Olympia Shopping Centre.

“There are uncorroborated reports of other incidents elsewhere in the city.

“The Munich underground system and other public transport has reportedly been shut down.

“If you are in an affected area, you are advised to stay indoors where possible and follow the advice of local authorities who are advising people to avoid crowded places across the city.

“There is a high threat from terrorism.

“The German government has announced that increased security has been put in place as a precaution at public buildings, major events, transport hubs and large public gatherings."

The shootings come just days after a 17-year-old asylum-seeker armed with an axe and a knife attacked five people on a train in Wurzburg, also in Bavaria.
