A Lithuanian man has had more than a kilogram of nails, screws, nuts and knives removed from his stomach by doctors.

The man was admitted to Klaipeda University Hospital after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

He had been swallowing metal objects for a month after giving up alcohol, doctors said.

Some of the objects removed from the man’s stomach during the three hour operation were 10cm (4in) long, according to Lithuania’s LRT public broadcaster.

Surgeons called it a “unique case”.

The man is now in a stable condition and is recovering in hospital.
