A NASA astronaut has shared a video showing breathtaking views of Earth taken during a recent spacewalk.

Randy Bresnik, 50, paused to take in the view while doing maintenance work on the International Space Station (ISS).

He shared the GoPro footage on social media on Monday.

The astronaut, from Kentucky, wrote: "Sometimes on a spacewalk, you just have to take a moment to enjoy the beauty of our planet Earth."

He added that the film was made during "our spacewalk where Joe Acaba and I refurbished the Canadarm 2 robotic arm and the Dextre robotic arm extension".

Mr Bresnik was selected as an astronaut in 2004 after a career in the military.

From Fort Knox, Kentucy, Mr Bresnik is part of the expedition 52/53 crew that launched in July 2017.

The footage was taken during a spacewalk in October that lasted nearly seven hours, a NASA blog suggested.

Mr Bresnik and flight engineer Joe Acaba worked to install a new high-definition camera system on a robotic arm of the ISS, according to the post.

It was the fifth spacewalk of Mr Bresnik's career.

Space station crew members have conducted 205 spacewalks in support of assembly and maintenance of the orbiting laboratory.
