This was the terrifying moment a concrete arch fell on pedestrians walking along a road in Nepal as a huge earthquake hit the country.

The structure, believed to be the entrance to the Tundikhel park in Kathmandu, crumbled and crashed to the ground on Saturday morning as the city faced an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale.

A man riding on a cart was hit by the arch as he was passing by despite desperate attempts to escape, according to reports.

In shocking CCTV footage filmed at the side of the road, one person is seen being dragged out from under the rubble as a cloud of smoke fills the street.

It was not immediately clear whether the victim's injuries were life-threatening.

WARNING: DISTRESSING FOOTAGE

The earthquake has so far claimed the lives of more than 5,000 people.

In Kathmandu, where most buildings were spared complete collapse, many residents - fearing aftershocks - have continued to camp in parks and other open spaces.

Planes carrying food and other supplies have been steadily arriving at Kathmandu's small airport, but the aid distribution process remains fairly chaotic, with Nepalese officials having difficulty directing the flow of emergency supplies.
