Two women were killed and four more people were injured after a gunman opened fire at a library in New Mexico.

The young man allegedly began shooting in the public library of the small town Clovis on Monday afternoon.

Armed police surrounded the building for more than an hour before the suspect, whose age and name has not been released, gave himself up and was arrested.

Two women were killed in the incident and a further two woman and two men were being treated at the University Medical Center in Texas. Two are in a critical condition.

Clovis Mayor David Lansford described the public killings as a “big blow to the community”, adding: "Two individuals have lost their lives. Their families will not see them come home."

Library patron Vanessa Aguirre said she was in the building with her son when a man came in and "started to shoot" into the air, The Eastern New Mexico News reported.

"It all happened so fast," she said. "We took off fast. My purse is still in there."

Pictures of the incident show scores of armed police approaching the library, a young man being led away by a police officer and a woman - who appeared to be injured - being carried into an ambulance.

Police chief Douglas Ford confirmed at a news conference that the young man was the suspect.
