Plastic straws could be banned in New York, in a move inspired by London’s crackdown.

A bill that would ban venues, bars and restaurants from providing plastic straws in the city, which gets through an estimated 15 million of them per day, had its first hearing at New York City Hall yesterday.

City council member Rafael Espinal, who introduced the bill last month, praised London for “leading the way” on curbing plastic straw use and said its success gave him confidence that it was also possible in New York.

He said: “What happened in London really put steam in this fight. It made me more confident we’re able to get something done here in New York.

“So I’m proud to say they [Londoners] are leading the way and we’re using their leadership to make sure things get done here in New York City.”

Mr Espinal said there is strong momentum and support behind the bill and that he hopes to get it passed into law “as soon as possible”.

Businesses would have a two-year grace period before being fined up to $400 (£300) if they are caught offering plastic straws or drink stirrers.
