The New York Mets baseball team has apologised after the squad’s mascot was caught giving a fan the middle finger.

Mr Met, one of America’s most popular mascots, was caught gesturing at a fan in a clip that was later shared on social media following the team’s loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Apologising for the “inappropriate” actions of the employee, the New York Mets said they were dealing with the incident, which happened on Wednesday, internally.

The team wrote on Twitter: “We apologise for the inappropriate action of this employee. We do not condone this type of behaviour. We are dealing with this matter internally.”

According to US reports, the mascot has since been fired following the gesture that was captured on film before being uploaded to Twitter and retweeted more than 1,500 times.

But not everyone was offended by the mascot’s gesture, with one fan writing on the social media site: “I thought that was awesome.”

Another added: “That was the coolest thing Mr Met has ever done”, with another saying: “Give that man a raise!”

Mr Met has been the official mascot for the New York team since 1962 and the costume is worn by more than one person every season.
