A Norwegian Airlines plane has been stuck in Iran for four weeks after it was forced to land in Shiraz with suspected engine issues.

Flight DY1933 landed in Shiraz on December 14 with passengers travelling on to Oslo the next day.

However the plane is expected to stay there for some time as the airlines considers ways to get around international sanctions imposed on Iran by the US.

A spokesman confirmed that the airlines was working on “multiple options to return the aircraft to service” after the plane safely diverted to Iran.

According to The National, mechanics are facing delays in getting hold of the parts needed to repair the aircraft because of the international sanctions.

Aircraft sales, including parts and services are banned under the sanctions.

AFP reported that the overnight stop in Iran could cause a problem for the 168 passengers on board in the future.

A passenger who was on board the flight told the National: “Emotions were high at the hotel when the promised evening flight didn’t materialise and we were told we would spend the night in Iran.

“Many argued that we should have been put on a quick flight back to Dubai, rather than kept in Iran overnight.”

Since 2015, anyone who has travelled to Iran since March 2011 is excluded from the US visa waiver programme.
