Police investigating the killing of British backpacker Grace Millane in New Zealand have found a shovel they suspect is linked to her death.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard said today the shovel "was located and seized in the central west Auckland area.”

He added that the shovel was located after police sifted through CCTV footage.

The 22-year-old was last seen in Auckland on December 1 in the company of a 26-year-old man. Police discovered her body a week later.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been charged with her murder. He is being held on remand and is scheduled to appear in the high court in January.

Hundreds of people paid tribute to Ms Millane on Wednesday in her hometown of Wickford.

Her mother Gillian and brothers Declan and Michael were among the 200 people lighting candles outside the Fox and Hounds pub.

The vigil followed others held across New Zealand that were attended by thousands, including Ms Millane’s father and uncle, who paid tribute.

It is expected David Millane is preparing to bring his daughter’s body home in the coming days.
