Mexican footballer Alan Pulido has been kidnapped in the northern border state of Tamaulipas, according to reports.

The 25-year-old striker was allegedly abducted on Sunday near his home in Ciudad Victoria after leaving a party with his girlfriend.

He plays as a forward for Greek team Olympiakos and was part of Mexico's 2014 World Cup team.

"We have information that he was intercepted by armed persons and since then his whereabouts are unknown," the state’s attorney general Ismael Quintanilla said.

Six masked men are believed to approached the striker in a car park and taken him away "by force" while his girlfriend was left behind unharmed.

A state official confirmed Pulido was kidnapped after leaving the party but gave no further details about the abduction or a motive.

Tamaulipas is one of Mexico’s most violent states and has suffered battles between major drug gangs in the past.

Former teammates from Mexico's national team offered their support on social media.

Goalkeeper Jesus Corona tweeted: “A shame what happened. My prayers are with him and his family at this difficult time."

Pulido debuted and played several seasons with the club Tigres of Monterrey, whose Twitter account expressed solidarity with the player's family.

He joined Olympiakos last July, finishing the season with six goals in 15 games.
