At least two people have been killed and several others injured in knife attacks in the Dutch city of Maastricht.

Witnesses reported hearing loud shouts as a man was stabbed to death during a fight in a residential neighbourhood in the north of the city at around 9pm.

Police said a suspect fled the scene and ten minutes later a women was fatally stabbed about half a mile away, while two men were injured. A third wounded person was later found at a nearby mosque.

One suspect has been detained on suspicion of involvement in the incidents. Police released no details on the suspect or the victims.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said it was not a terror attack, echoing comments from the police.

"It is terrible what happened there. People were killed and others were injured," Rutte said at an EU summit in Brussels.

Police said the investigations are continuing.
