A worker has been killed injured when part of a bridge came crashing down in Germany.

Six others were seriously injuried when a 40-metre section of the bridge, which is under construction, collapsed on Wednesday.

About 20 contractors were working at the site and several others were slightly injured, police said.

It was not immediately clear what led to the collapse.

The new bridge runs parallel to an existing bridge on the A7 near Werneck in northern Bavaria.

Officials initially reported that several people had been killed.
