Lockdown: Boulevard de la Madeleine has been taped-off by police

Central Paris was on lockdown this morning amid reports of a bomb alert.

Boulevard de la Madeleine was completely taped off as armed police surrounded a parked car, it has been reported.

At 11.15am local time, a controlled explosion was carried out on the Place de la Madeleine in order to blow a hole in the window of a small Fiat.

Police were then seen examining the car with mirrors and other equipment before sniffer dogs were drafted in.

The famous street is one of the four 'grands boulevards' in Paris - a chain of roads running across the city from east to west.

France is currently under a state of emergency following a string of terror attacks, which has seen officials in the capital Paris cancel a number of public events.

Officers also sealed-off surrounding streets.

Roads were reopened shortly after the controlled explosion.
