Former Donald Trump aide Paul Manafort is set to be appear in court on state criminal charges.

Manafort, Mr Trump's former campaign chairman who was convicted last year in federal court, will be arraigned in New York to face 16 felony charges brought by the Manhattan district attorney, according to a court spokesman.

The state charges include mortgage fraud, conspiracy and falsifying business records, and relate to alleged efforts by Manafort and others to obtain millions of dollars in loans on New York properties.

Manafort was sentenced in March to seven-and-a-half years in prison for federal tax fraud, bank fraud and foreign lobbying violations.

Federal prosecutors accused him of hiding $16 million from U.S. tax authorities that he earned as a consultant for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine, and then lying to banks to obtain $20 million in loans when the money dried up.

The federal charges stemmed from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance announced a 16-count criminal indictment shortly afterwards.

The 70-year-old is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

Manafort faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted on the top charges in the New York case.
