This is the first picture of two cousins stabbed to death outside a train station in Marseille by a man shouting "Allahu Akbar".

Mauranne Harel, 20, and Laura Paumier, 21, died from their wounds after being knifed as they sat in the sun waiting for a train at Saint Charles station on Sunday.

The assailant was killed by soldiers immediately after the attack, the latest of several to target France.

Ms Harel, from Eguilles in Aix-en-Provence, was about to begin her third year studying medicine at Marseille university, Le Parisien reported.

Her cousin, Ms Paumier, 21, was studying to become a nurse in Lyon and was visiting for the weekend. She was also a scout leader, according to her Facebook page.

It comes after the suspect was revealed to have been detained for shoplifting and released the day before the attack.

He was identified by his fingerprints, which matched those taken during previous arrests, according to two police officials. He was not on France's extremist watch list.

French officials are studying the suspect's mobile phone and working to determine whether he had accomplices or direct links to Islamic State (IS), which claimed responsibility for the stabbings.

The man used multiple pseudonyms and identity papers, making it difficult to determine his true identity - or even to find a house to search.

Interior minister Gerard Collomb said police have obtained video that shows the man attacking a woman and running away, then coming back and attacking a second woman.

Some witnesses reported hearing the assailant shout "Allahu akbar" - Arabic for "God is great".
