These amazing pictures taken from space show the potentially deadly typhoon heading for the Philippines.

The photographs of typhoon Maysak were taken by astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti and shared on Twitter.

Residents and tourists in the Philippines have been told to prepare themselves for when the storm hits, which is expected to be in the next three days.

The army has been preparing supplies of food and medicine as a precaution, according to reports.

The storm has already destroyed homes on the nearby island of Weno.

At least five people are reported to have died after the storm landed in the Micronesian state of Chuuk.

Many residents were also left without water and sought shelter at schools.

Weather forecasters have graded the typhoon at category five and have said its wind speeds have reached up to 155mph.

But they predict the typhoon's intensity could decrease in the coming days - with wind speeds dropping to about 110mph - the equivalent of a category two storm.

Weather service meteorologist Derek Williams said the storm is expected to weaken significantly when it gets to the Philippine Sea, but it is still expected to cause widespread damage.

He told the Associated Press: "Our main concern is the atolls northwest of Yap, Fais and Ulithi. The sustained winds are around 150 miles per hour at this point, gusting to 180."

He continued: "The weather conditions are deteriorating rapidly. Typhoon conditions on Fais is imminent. The entire island could be covered in water from storm surge."
