US police officers are reported to have fatally shot a 23-year-old man who they said was ‘wielding a knife’.

The incident took place close to Ferguson, where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said officers responded to an alert at shop where a man was reported to have stolen energy drinks and a pastry.

He said the man was behaving erratically and said “shoot me now, kill me now”.

Officers were reported to open fire when the man began to approach them with a knife.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Ferguson has been hit with riots since the shooting unarmed black teenager Michael Brown.

Yesterday peaceful protests turned ugly after a tense standoff erupted into street battles.
