A man accused of murdering bride Michaela McAreavey on her honeymoon in Mauritius told a court today that police had threatened to lock up his parents and deport his wife if he did not sign a confession.

Avinash Treebhoowoon wept as he claimed officers said they could do what they liked because they controlled the government.

He also told the supreme court in Port Louis that police repeatedly pushed his head under water during interrogation forcing him to vomit blood.

Hotel workers Treebhoowoon, 31, and Sandip Moneea, 42, deny murdering the 27-year-old newlywed at the island’s Legends Hotel last January. The prosecution claim they strangled her after she found them ransacking her hotel room.

Her husband of 11 days John found his wife’s body. He and other members of the family watched from the public gallery today.

The trial continues.
