Members of the public have been banned from the pavement along the south side of the White House amid security concerns.

The stretch of pavement along the south fence has been closed each night – between 11pm and 6am – since 2015.

But US Secret Service officials said it will now be closed permanently to "lessen the possibility of individuals illegally accessing the White House grounds”.

Reuters reported that the move comes after a man climbed the fence east of the building and night and was roaming the grounds for 16 minutes before being detained.

The Secret Service said President Trump was in White House at the time.

It was the latest in a series of security breaches in recent years and security was bolstered in 2015 with the installation of sharp spikes on top of the iron fence circling the 18-acre property.

Officials said blocking-off the pavement will not obstruct the public's ability to view or photograph the White House and its grounds and said no additional "physical" barriers would be installed.

The same restrictions are in place on the north fence of the rounds.
