A pupil has shot dead his teacher in front of his fellow students during class in Estonia, police said.

The 15-year-old boy killed the 53-year-old German teacher with a gun registered with his father at the Paalalinna school in the town of Viljandi today.

It was the first known school shooting in the small Baltic country.

The teenager has since been apprehended by police. No one else was injured in the attack.

Prime minister Taavi Roivas described the incident as a "shock to us all" and said the teenager's motive was not yet clear.

In a statement, he said: “The shooting in Viljandi, which ended in the death of a teacher, came as a shock to all of us. All of Estonia has Viljandi in its thoughts today.

“We do not know yet what caused the incident, but violence is never an acceptable solution. Such things should not happen. My deepest condolences to the loved ones and colleagues of the deceased teacher."

Police said they were continuing to investigate the incident and could not immediately provide further details.
