Rajshri Deshpande has spoken of the dangers of technology after a 30-second clip of a sex scene she featured in from the show Sacred Games went viral.
The scene, which showed consensual sex between a gangster and his wife, was widely shared on the messaging app WhatsApp and was uploaded multiple times onto YouTube.
Ms Deshpande was described as a “porn star” by people online and some claimed she should be “ashamed” of the scene.
But Ms Deshpande said she does not feel ashamed and has warned people to be more responsible on social media.
She told the BBC: “Why should I be ashamed? I have complete faith in my character and the importance of that scene to the story,
“My intention was right. I haven't done any wrong.
"If you get a message like this, you need to think about what you should do with it," she said.
"Technology is a weapon, it can be used to destroy someone or save them."
Sacred Games is a new Netflix series which was released earlier in the month.
It is part of the streaming service’s bid to entice more viewers from India to the site.
Netflix currently has plans to release two more Indian series including Ghoul, a horror set in a detention centre, and Crocodile, a murder mystery set in Goa.
