Rescuers in Thailand say they won't immediately attempt the evacuation of the 12 schoolboys and their coach as their diving skills are "not adequate."

The official in charge of the operation Governor Narongsak Osatanakorn said that the boys would not be coming out of the cave today because "they cannot dive at this time."

He said that the boys had been practising wearing the masks and diving.

Authorities are concerned about the incoming rainy season and said that they would take the boys out of the cave right away if the water started to rise.

It comes following the death of a former navy SEAL on Friday.

Saman Kunan died at about 1am when he ran out of oxygen as he was returning from placing the tanks along the route to the boys. He was brought out by his dive partner but could not be revived.

The British Cave Rescue Council estimates that the boys are about 1.2 miles into the cave and just over half a mile below the surface, however other estimates put the boys as far as 2.5 miles into the cave.

The boys, aged between 11 and 16, were discovered on Monday after they had been missing for nine days.

Rescuers now face the crucial task of getting them and their football coach out, however they may to stay put for another four months before they can escape safely.

Earlier on Thursday it was revealed that Elon Musk was sending engineers to Thailand with the hope of creating a breathable 'tube' that will allow the boys to crawl free underwater.

According to authorities, oxygen levels inside the cave are decreasing because of the amount of workers inside.

Rescuers are now trying to run an oxygen line inside in addition to oxygen canisters delivered by divers.
