Two thirds of British voters feel Donald Trump’s impending arrival in the White House makes the world "a more dangerous place", it has been revealed.

A ComRes poll for The Independent and Sunday Mirror has revealed deep concerns surrounding Mr Trump’s presidency following his stunning election victory against Hillary Clinton.

In the first survey carried out since Mr Trump became President-elect, 53 per cent of people predicted he would be a “bad president” while just 15 per cent said he would be “good”.

And 66 per cent of adults agreed with the statement “Donald Trump as president makes the world a more dangerous place”, while 10 per cent thought it made the world “safer”.

Since his election win, Mr Trump has reaffirmed his campaign pledge to destroy so-called Islamic State by helping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his Government.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Friday, he said: “I’ve had an opposite view of many people regarding Syria.

“My attitude was you’re fighting Syria, Syria is fighting Isis, and you have to get rid of Isis.”

He said while he “did not like [Mr Assad] at all”, helping him to strengthen his regime is the most effective way to combat extremism which threatens the US.

Forty per cent of people surveyed also thought Mr Trump would be “bad” for US/UK relations in contrast to 29 per cent who thought it would be “good”.

However, more people believed Mr Trump’s arrival would make it easier for the UK to negotiate a favourable trade deal in the wake of Brexit talks.

Some 36 per cent agreed with the statement while 32 per cent thought it would be “harder”.

ComRes interviewed 2,038 British adults online over two days in November. Full tables are available on the ComRes website.
