A young Russian soldier broke down in tears after speaking with his mother when he was captured by Ukrainians.

In the footage uploaded to social media the unnamed soldier is given the opportunity to speak to his mother by a local Ukrainian calls her on his phone.

When his mother answers the video call the soldier becomes emotional and is unable to speak.

After the conversation, one of the local Ukrainians tells the soldier’s mother that he will be in good hands, the Washington Post reports.

The woman said: “Don’t worry Natasha, he’s alive and well. You will get a call later.”

Numerous other videos have surfaced on social media of Russian prisoners of war telling loved ones of the true intent of Russia’s invasion.

In one video, a soldier is seen handcuffed speaking to his mother, telling her that they must raise support against the Russian president.

He said: “Mum, we need to raise people against Putin.”

Others also revealed they believed they were being sent for military exercises or for a peacekeeping mission.

Another video shows a soldier in handcuffs telling his mother that he loves her, adding: “They sent us to death, everyone killed everyone.”

Ukrainian officials have claimed 9,000 Russian troops have been killed since Putin began his brutal invasion last week.

The country’s defence ministry said any captured soldiers would be handed over if their family comes to collect them.

A statement from the ministry said: “You will be received and taken to Kyiv where your son will be returned to you.

“Unlike Putin’s fascists, we Ukrainians are not waging war against mothers and their captured children.”
